Guardianship Specialists provide professional advocacy for individuals without family members or other supports systems in the areas of medical, legal and personal finances.
Levels of Guardianship:
Guardian of Person -
- Ensures ward's personal needs are met
- Advocates for necessary services
- Consents for medical procedures and treatment
- Advocates for least restrictive placement setting
Guardian of Estate -
- Ensures financial obligations are met
- Applies for local, state and federal programs, such as social security, medical assistance/medicare, and food share
- Ensures ward's personal property is protected
Representative Payee -
- Appointed by SSA to receive Social Security and/or SSI benefits to manage the beneficiary's money
- Uses benefits to pay for the current and foreseeable needs of the individual
- Properly saves any benefits not needed to meet current needs
- Files annual representative payee accounting report to social security administration
- Keeps records of all payments received and how they are spent and/or saved
- Completes written reports accounting for the use of funds
